Visits take place in pairs at various times of the day and night and each ICV carries out approximately 3 visits per month. They report on the treatment of detainees and conditions within the custody suite, helping to ensure that police and the public have the highest confidence in the safety and welfare of those detained. Completely autonomous from the Police, Independent Custody Visitors have the right to access custody suites and speak directly to the detainees.

Visitors complete a report and record their findings, including any issues raised. The ICV scheme in Essex is committed to ensuring that its panel members reflect the communities they represent, and we welcome applications from all age groups and all walks of life. Full training and support is provided and members also have the opportunity to attend regular meetings and conferences to further develop their skills. The posts are voluntary and unpaid, but travel expenses are fully reimbursed.

Applicants must be aged 18 and over and recruitment is subject to police vetting. If your application is successful, we will ask you to come in and meet the team.
